Stage 1 of the 'Opening the Red Gates' competition run by Auckland City Council, Auckland Regional Council and the Ministry of Economic Development, attracted 237 entries. A joint entry between Construkt and Sills Van Bohemen Architecture Ltd was selected as 1 of 5 finalists. The brief called for design proposals to develop Queens Wharf with a new Cruise Ship Terminal and the primary Live Site during the Rugby World Cup 2011, and flexible public open space and event space for Aucklanders.
As a finalist we were invited to develop our initial concept ideas further, as part of Stage 2 of the competition, in order to select a winning design by the end of 2009. Politics and the rugby world cup took over and the rest as they say is history. No winning design was ever announced.
